Into the Stars was written for the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band as part of their Brass Pass UK Band of the Year programme. The piece tells the story of the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. It's perfect as a dramatic opener to any programme!
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy presented a bold challenge before a joint session of Congress: send a man to the moon by the end of the decade.
“No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space.” - J.F.K.
Despite skepticism from many, Kennedy’s dream became a success on July 20, 1969, when millions of people saw the launch of Apollo 11.
The launch occurred at 13:32 from the Kennedy space centre before the Apollo 11 travelled for 3 days reaching speeds of 24,000mph. At 20:17 the lunar module Eagle landed in the sea of tranquility and 6 hours later Neil Armstrong became the first man to step foot on the moon. After completing their lunar surface operations, the Apollo 11 crew began their descent to earth before hurtling into the Pacific Ocean at 12:50 on July 24, 1969.
The Apollo 11 mission was a success.
